Amy Brown, Carrie Holt, and Sara Clime are all special needs moms, and they are no strangers to mom guilt! With diagnoses ranging from behavioral disorders to terminal illness of their children, they’ve had to learn to find the balance of the everyday family needs, extra therapies, and appointments, to realizing that they just can’t do it all.
One major point that we all need to learn to believe is that God does not tack guilt on us. Jesus states that he didn’t come to condemn us, but Satan tries to keep us from that truth and steal God’s redemptive power in our lives. As moms, we tend to tell ourselves our failure stories over and over again. However, when we learn to focus on the truth and our true value and identity as the moms that God chose specifically for our families, we will finally be able to allow God to walk us through our mom guilt and into the peace that God has overcome it all.

John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Motherhood is hard. I definitely am not able to “enjoy every moment” that many people lovingly offer as advice to moms with children at home. Actually, the more I dig deeper into motherhood, the more I realize how much of a battleground it truly is. Satan hates motherhood, and sadly, a lot of times he is successful at getting me to hate it as well. I have found it to be incredibly freeing to discuss this openly, to admit my faults in hopes that others can relate and feel less alone (and selfishly, so that I feel less alone as well). The more I’ve shared, the more I realize how trapped so many of us mamas are in the lies: that motherhood is too hard; that we are alone; that we’ve messed up too much for redemption; that we don’t deserve rest; that God doesn’t care about the unique struggles that we are facing as parents. I recorded this episode in the middle of one of my deepest, darkest moments as a mom. I didn’t know what God was doing, or even where He was. I felt (and still often do) lost, confused, betrayed, much like the Israelites at the Red Sea and the Disciples during Jesus’ nap on the turbulent boat. I found myself, like them, asking “God, don’t you care?!”

And then I remembered all of the work I’ve done for this podcast over the past 3 years. God never leaves ashes and pain as the ending of the story. So this episode is a raw, honest, unscripted confession of many of the things I’ve battled as a mother. In the end, like all of the amazing stories of God’s faithfulness, He showed me that He is indeed working. The seeds I’m sowing now in tears will be harvested someday with songs of joy.

Psalm 126:5-6 – Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest.

Becky Kopitzke is a normal mom, with normal struggles. One day she realized: every mom has strife, and every mom has flaws. Her passion has led to a blog and books where she lovingly brings you to the “No Judgment Zone” to help you get out of the cycle of shame, anxiety, or stress in your motherhood journey.

This episode focuses on our imperfections in motherhood and being brave enough to admit it. Specifically, we discuss how God is stronger than our mistakes, and how He meets us and loves us there. Sometimes that means God convicts us, which Becky considers an indication that she’s near to God. She also recognizes conviction as an invitation God extends for us to draw near to Him. Other times includes God’s discipline, which can be painful but is always loving (listen for a story about my broken toe and how God showed me more love than I deserved).

Becky’s big advice points to help us grow and succeed in our motherhood journey are: have an intentional presence (“drop it and do it,”); anchoring our identity in Christ and not in how “good” of a mom you are; honesty and vulnerable sharing; and above all, GRACE!

Isaiah 40:11 – He tends his flocks like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.
